There Commodore in-charge of naval establishments stated that his character was very good. Copy is herewith annexed.
That the said Nicholas Nolan then entered the service of the Government of Hong Kong as a Warder in Victoria Gaol, and was gradually promoted to the post of Principal Warder, and remained in such service until the 4th July 1896, upon which date, as before stated, the said Nicholas Nolan departed this life. He was of continuous good behaviour during that period and in January 1887, General Gordon, the then Superintendent of the said Gaol, gave him a certificate (Copy attached herewith) commending him for his active and energetic conduct and recommending him for promotion.
That your petitioner was in the service of the said Government as Matron of the said Gaol for more than 4 years. In the month of December 1896, your petitioner was obliged to retire from such position on the ground of ill health and on so retiring was presented by the Government with a gratuity of $597 in respect of her services as such Matron. That since the retirement of your petitioner as aforesaid, your petitioner has not been and is not now able to obtain other employment.
That the family of your petitioner and the said Nicholas Nolan consists of two sons and no more. That one of which sons is employed
